What a beautiful country! Today was a day off for the team after a weekend of work and worship and more. We had a field trip a couple of hours northeast of Quito to Otavalo. Otavalo has an historic market dating to before the conquistadors. A large square block plaza was filled with largely indigenous people selling local handicrafts and some modern items like Ecuadorian themed t-shirts. I can't leave out our awesome lunch at the "Pie Shop." They sell pies! They also sell enormous sandwiches. After our team finished our meal they had no more hamburgers or chocolate pie (both of which I had -- go figure). After lunch we went to the "Middle of the World" a spot on the equator where we posed for our first group photo. That should be posted soon. While there we had a baƱo break. The gift shop had some religious art, which I learned some was carved by the husband of the couple who owned the business. I was pointing a piece out to Dianna when the proud wife told us her husband did it and that he was a pastor. I told her that I was a pastor too, and she brought her husband over and we tried to have a conversation about where he ministered, etc. Then on our way out the door she asked me to give her a blessing. As so much of what I have experienced, it has been me who was blessed. Tonight our wonderful hostel hosts fixed us a dinner of spaghetti, meat sauce, salad (our first in Ecuador), garlic bread, and a magnificent custard for dessert. Tomorrow we begin our two days at Carmen Bajo. What a phenomenal experience this has been! HM+
